Holiday Day Camps

Our Summer Day Camps are back for 2021! We have a new home – the amazing Frylands Wood Outdoor Scout Centre – with new facilities (goodbye camping loo!) and we’re raring to go.

It’s been a long and difficult year so we can’t wait to welcome old friends, meet new ones and get out into those beautiful woods. Read on to find out what’s in store.

The camp will run every weekday from 26 July to 6 August ’21 and is open to kids aged from 8 to 14 years old. Places sell out fast so book here now.

As ever, our Day Camps are all about unplugged, energetic, outdoor play that makes the most of the site’s beautiful woodland and fields. Our range of games and problem-solving activities including laser tag, archery, shelter building, forest skills, firelighting, map-reading, camp cooking and more will keep your youngsters on the go all day. Frylands Wood has a fantastic woodland obstacle course which we’re excited to weave into our activities too.

Each day is different at a Make Ready Day Camp, depending upon the setting, the weather, and the group dynamic. We want our Day Campers to feel that they can take things at their own pace and are careful to ensure they feel included, comfortable and safe at all times, yet don’t feel as if they’re being overly-directed or put through a bootcamp. We also take a flexible approach to differentiating between children and teens of different ages. All activities are age-appropriate, many in mixed age groups, others in smaller groups where age is often but not always a factor, it depends on the individual.

Covid precautions

Your children’s safety and wellbeing are our first consideration and we operate within government guidelines at all times. Our woodland setting, being completely outdoors whatever the weather, is a huge plus. We’ve also put a host of measures to minimise risk in place, in as unobtrusive and relaxed a way as possible, which all parents/carers will be required to agree to on booking.

When and wherE?

Monday 26 to Friday 30 July and Monday 2 to Friday 6 August 2021. Drop-off is between 8.30 and 9am and pick up between 4.30 and 5pm.

Make Ready’s Summer Day Camp will take place at Frylands Wood Scout Outdoor Centre, Featherbed Lane, Croydon, CRO 9AA – see Frylands Wood on Google Maps for directions.

Whilst we loved our previous setting, we’re thrilled to be moving to Frylands Wood. Along with ‘proper’ toilets and washing facilities, parking will be much easier for parents and carers. Plus, there’s more space to explore and everything is set up to accomodate outdoor groups like ours.

Booking & prices

We plan our Day Camps as a week-long experience and would love to have your child join us for the full week (or more) but we’re happy to take bookings by the day too – whatever suits you.

Each individual day, 8.30/9am to 5pm, costs £40 per child.

Fees are payable in advance. Places sell out quickly so please book your places early to avoid disappointment.

In the unlikely event that Covid restrictions are re-imposed, making the Camp impossible to run, we will refund all pre-paid fees.

The not-so-obvious benefits

Make Ready’s Summer Day Camps focus on fun and making the most of being outside, with friends. We don’t follow a formal ‘curriculum’, this isn’t school. However, we’re an experienced team specialising in outdoor education so can’t help but set out the benefits summer camps like this bring…

Spending long days outside, with woods and fields to explore, no homework to do (and, dare we say it, no parents or teachers) is rare for many children these days. We give them that experience. We build their confidence, develop their communication skills, teach them new practical skills and introduce them to traditional games they may not have encountered yet. After the strange and unsettling year we’ve all had because of Covid, this is all more important than ever for young people.

We build kids’ familiarity with the natural world and we support them, in a light touch way, to make friends. Most importantly, we give them the space to have fun.

What to wear and bring:

Our Day Camps are all about being outside and active so kids need to wear comfortable, sensible (washable!) clothing suitable for running around and playing. Bear in mind they may well get muddy, end up with grass stains etc. Please wear trainers but bring wellies too, just in case. Sun hats, suncream and raincoats are essential.

We have no kitchen facilities at our Day Camps. We do provide limited snacks (in line with current Covid guidance) but your child needs to bring a packed lunch and water bottle please.

It’s fine to bring a book or comics for some quiet time out but children won’t need anything else, we provide all equipment for games and activities.

What not to wear and bring:

No precious designer outfits please and no long trailing skirts, dresses or anything else that might trip kids up or get in the way.

No electronic devices please – we can’t take responsibility for these and there won’t be opportunity during the day to use them. If it’s absolutely essential that your child brings a phone with them we can store it during the day. We will give all parents and carers a mobile number to call if need be during the day and will happily take essential messages. We will also, where you give permission, take some photos each day and share those (privately and securely) with parents and carers.
